Making An Impact

Young Life is active in various high schools and middle schools in the area. Young Life is making a difference in kids' lives. Here's an example of how Young Life is reaching kids: John regularly attends basketball practice at the high school where he is a Young Life leader. At first, John did not know the young men on the basketball team, but after weeks of watching practice he began to get to know who they were and exchanged a few short conversations with some of the players. One day, one of the players approached John. "You come to watch us practice a lot don't you?" the young man asked John. "Yes, I do," John said. "That's cool," the young man said. "No one does that."

The Role of a Young Life Volunteer

Leaders are committed to being involved with kids' lives -- from supporting them at their sporting events to listening to them talk about what's important to them. Our leaders help kids consider the direction of their lives, and they offer hope for their future.

Penn Valley and UMKC Students

Do You Desire to Grow in Your Faith
Young Life would like to have a growing presence on Penn Valley and UMKC college campuses for those students who are interested in growing in their faith journey.  Our leadeship team of adults would like to have the opportunity to nurture, guide and encourage you to become young adults who are committed followers of Jesus Christ and prepared to serve Him in our community.

Do You Desire to Serve Christ?
If you are a current student at Penn Valley or UMKC and are interested in volunteer leadership opportunities with high school or middle school kids, then we would love to talk with you!  College students make great Young Life leaders, and most Young Life areas are eager to embrace, train and include college students on their Young Life teams.  If you're a college student interested in being involved in Young Life in this way please contact our office.

More About Urban Young Life
Urban Young Life is a ministry to kids from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds who live in communities that have a history of being socially and economically disadvantaged.

Urban young people, like teenagers everywhere, seek identity and significance. They want someone to express, "You count for something!" Young Life leaders are there during this time, sharing with kids that the most exciting person ever to have walked the face of the earth is Christ.

The Mission of Kansas City Urban Young Life is to:
Introduce young people to Christ.
Help teenagers grow in their faith.
Provide an adult friend for kids as they go through adolescence.
Help kids gain the skills, assets and attitudes they will need to reach their God-given potential in life.
We Want to Get to Know You!
We would like to spend first semester getting to know you over a few meals and coffee breaks.  Our hope is to be able to match each potential leader with the best mission opportunity for you based on your gifts, strengths and where you desire to serve.  Please call the Kansas City Urban office to let us know you are interested or email Leonard Davis at ldavis@kc.younglife.org.

Volunteer Leader Opportunities

August 2, 2010
Author: Cathy Johnson
IF YOU’RE READING THIS, chances are you’re an college age student or an adult who cares about kids. At its best, Young Life is a tapestry of volunteers, with adults of all ages and backgrounds coming together to create a vibrant picture of God’s love for high school students.

Volunteer leaders are adults — ranging from college students to retirees — who give their time at the high schools, leading club and small groups (campaigners) and taking kids to camp. They are people whose hearts are fixed on teenagers, and they give their time and energy to becoming friends who can point high school kids on the path to a fulfilling life.

Young Life Club and Wyldlife Club
Clubs are weekly meetings within a local community that are open to any kid who wants to attend. Young Life clubs are for high school kids, and WyldLife clubs are for middle school kids. Approximately 100,000 nationwide attend club each week to sing, laugh, play games and hear a leader share great news about God’s love in terms they can understand.

Camp
Young Life owns and operates 25 premier properties across the country, where more than 80,000 kids spend a weekend during the school year or a week each summer hiking, boating, biking, swimming, horseback riding, climbing through ropes courses and speeding around go-cart tracks. In addition, they get to hang out with their friends and leaders from home, have club every night and take a closer look at how much God loves them.

Campaigners
Kids often meet in small groups with a leader during the week to discuss their ideas and questions about faith and begin exploring the Bible. These groups are named from a term we’ve kept around since Young Life was called “The Young Life Campaign” in the early ’40s. OK, so we’re sentimental. We’ve also held onto the idea that the Bible is the best book around for understanding life.

Contact Work
Young Life is not a facility-based ministry--we don’t ask kids to come to us. Leaders go to them, wherever they may be. It’s a simple principle modeled by Christ and “rediscovered” more than 60 years ago when the handful of men and women who were developing Young Life’s methods began showing up at football practices, games or local hangouts just to get to know kids. Contact work is about building relationships and earning the trust and
friendship of teenagers.

Church
Young Life is not officially connected to any particular church, but we believe church is a very important part of nurturing a relationship with Christ. Our staff and leaders are committed followers of Jesus Christ and come from many denominations, and we encourage kids to become involved in the churches that are most familiar to their families.

If their families are not connected with a church, we offer suggestions when appropriate.  But because we respect the faith and opinion of their parents, we want kids to do the same.
